What is Neuro-linguistic programming and how does it work with hypnosis?

When you’re suffering through a low point in your life that requires you to dig yourself out of a deep hole, or you’re another victim of troublesome mental ailments, there are a few things you can do to help. Medication is not one of them, not in every case. Your best bet would be trying out a practice that has worked for decades: neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

NLP is a psychotherapeutic technique used by hypnotherapists around the world to help patients overcome phobias and anxiety, as well as to help them acquire the fundamental skills that highly successful people use to get ahead in life.

Although deemed a pseudoscience by experts in the world of science, NLP is as real as it gets with a proven track record dating back to the 1970s when it was first practiced by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the U.S.

What is Neuro-linguistic Programming all about?

This technique is all about subjectivity, consciousness and learning, but can be complicated to wrap your head around at first. So, to make it easier for you to understand, let’s break the concept down into its root words:

Neuro – neurology: The physical and mental components of your nervous system.

Linguistic – language: The language that we use, as well as how we use it with others and with ourselves.

Programming – function: our ability to convince our minds, both conscious and subconscious, to take on certain perceptions for our own development.

How does Neuro-linguistic Programming work?

NLP is all about responsible communication, changing your perceptions, and developing choices of responses in any given situation. It’s centred around the idea of empowering patients by giving them choices and holding them accountable to those choices.

NLP also works on the idea that people can be programmed into copying the behaviours of people who can accomplish things that a patient may want to accomplish, such as getting over a habit or even developing a new one.

NLP works in tandem with hypnosis. During therapy, patients are put into deep mental states that allow them to sift through layers upon layers of beliefs and perceptions to uncover the root cause of a certain behavioural pattern. This technique works on the premise that everyone can affect real and positive change in their own lives.

This technique can be content free, which means the therapist wouldn’t have to know about a certain problem in great detail to help a patient overcome it. NLP is non-invasive, much like most hypnotherapeutic methods of healing.
